Coccydynia is a type of lower back pain felt around the last bone at the base of the spine (the coccyx), known as tailbone pain.
The condition can occur from direct trauma (like a fall), childbirth, repetitive strain, or without any specific cause at all (idiopathic coccydynia).
Rest, avoiding reinjury, use of a well-padded seat or a donut cushion, and pain medications can help. Physical therapy and local injections can also be used. In rare, stubborn cases of coccydynia, surgical removal of the coccyx (coccygectomy) may be considered.
